The Hindu News Update Service: "Kerala seeks Rs 150 cr as central assistance

Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (PTI): Kerala government has sought a financial assistance of Rs 150 crore from the Centre to provide immediate relief to those who lost properties in the current monsoon fury, state Revenue Miniter K P Rajendran told the state assembly today.

The actual loss of crops and properties in the heavy rain and high-velocity wind that lashed many parts of the state would be known only after getting the final report from the district officials, he said replying to submissions on rain related matters raised by several members.

Admitting that the present quantum of amount given as financial assitance to various categories of property loss in natural calamity was inadequate and very low, he said the state government had repeatedly asked the Centre to change the norms and guidelines for sanctioning financial assistance to victims of natural calamities.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan himself had taken up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the former's recent visit to Delhi, Rajendran said and wanted the co-operation and support of Congress led UDF in realising this demand from the Centre.

In this regard, Rajendran said Centre sanctioned only Rs 28 crore last year for calamity relief works even though the state's request was much more than this.
