Kalamandalam Hemalatha Break the World Record for Longest Dance Performance


Famous Mohiniyattam dancer Kalamandalam Hemalatha break the world record for the longest dance performance by crossing the existing record performed in Mohiniyattam for 108 hours continuously, attained by Dr Vattikotta Yadagiri Acharya of Hyderabad in 2008. She reached the Guinness record at 9.32 pm on Saturday(25.09.2010), at the K T Muhammad Smaraka Theatre of the Kerala Nadaka Sangeetha Academy, Thrissur. Her aim is to reach the 120 hour mark by performing Mohiniyattam continuously from September 20 to September 26.
The danseuse had made an earlier attempt to set the record in Mohiniyattam dance on June 6 this year aiming to dance continuously for 120 hours, but was forced to stop after 64 hours due to health problems. After graduating from Kalamandalam, Hemalatha also took a degree in Bharathanatyam from Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirapalli and MA (Bharathanatyam) from Indira Kala Viswa Vidyalaya, a deemed university at Chattisgarh. She was the student of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, and her husband is P.B. Jayan & she has two children, Swaroop and Saurav.
